Rainbow is a commonly used term and imagery internationally to broadly encompass all those in queer communities, sometimes including family and allies, especially in a human rights context. It reflects the fact that diversity is positive, and gender and sexuality is understood as being on a spectrum.
LGBTI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex. Like queer, it is used as a short-hand term that represents sexuality and gender diversity in its broadest sense. Sometimes LGBT or LGBTQ is also used by other authors.
Trans is used in this context as the umbrella term encompassing many different forms of gender diversity and gender identity, including FtM, MtF, intersex, transsexual, cross-dresser, (Cross dressing) whakawahine, fa'afafine, transvestite, transgenderist, androgyne, and gender-queer
Our goal is to work with students, teachers and professional organisations to provide helpful information and realistic solutions for our youth.
